Independent Living Services
Although there is a lack of suitable housing in South Africa for intellectually disabled adults who wish to live independently, The Living Link supports this choice if it is a viable option for their members. Once a member has a achieved a certain level of independence, security at work and financial stability, The Living Link facilitates the move of that young adult from family living to independent living in the community. The Living Link supports graduates who chose to move into their own homes by offering the following services:
- Helping to establish financial stability
- Helping to establish support network infrastructure and availability
- Helping to negotiate housing options
- Matching housemates if sharing is an option
- Assessing permanent employment, stability of income and availability of transport
- House visits addressing the following:
- Meal planning
- Grocery shopping
- Budgeting
- Home maintenance
- Safety and security
- Transport
- Health, sexuality and hygiene
