In South Africa, a significant gap exists between leaving school and entering adulthood for young people with intellectual disabilities, learning challenges, and neurodiversity. For many, this stage marks the end of structured support, with limited access to further training, skills development, or employment—leading to high unemployment, dependency, and isolation.
The Living Link exists to change this.
We create structured pathways into adulthood by equipping young people with the skills, confidence, and real-world experience needed to access opportunity and participate meaningfully in society. Through accredited training and workplace exposure, we bridge the gap between potential and possibility, opening doors to inclusion, independence, and dignity.
Our Vision
To create a society where young adults with learning differences and disabilities are included, valued, and able to live and work with independence and dignity.
Our Mission
Our History
The Living Link was founded in 2000 by Julia Wilkinson and Ingrid Menzel, inspired by their daughter and sister, Nadine Wilkinson.
As Nadine, who has an intellectual disability, transitioned into adulthood, her family was faced with a reality that many families know too well. There were very few opportunities, limited support systems, and no clear pathway into independence.
Julia and Ingrid took it upon themselves to support Nadine in developing the life and social skills she needed to navigate the world. With patience, consistency, and belief in her potential, they helped her grow into an independent adult, able to work, live meaningfully, and be part of her community.
Through this journey, they realised that what Nadine needed was not unique, and that many other families were facing the same challenges without the same support.
What began as a deeply personal commitment to one young woman grew into a vision to support many.
The Living Link was established to create opportunities for other young adults to access the same independence, dignity, and sense of belonging.
